Bu soru Ingiltere`de sıklıkla sorulan sorulardan biridir, aslında hava durumu en çok konuşulan konuların başında gelir. Türkiye`den farklı olarak, ne kadar çok güneşli ve güzel bir hava dilerseniz dileyin, buradaki havaya hiçbir zaman güvenemezsiniz. Kaç kez Wimeldon tennis maçlarını seyrettiğinizde çim sahanın üstü yağmur sebebiyle kapatılmak durumunda kaldı?; ne demek istediğimi simdi anlıyorsunuz değil mi!
Her baharda arkadaşlar arasındaki sohbetlerimizde konuşuruz `umarım bu yaz bir önceki yazdan çok daha güzel geçer…` ve çoğu zaman sonuç hayal kırıklığı olmuştur. Belkide Ingiltere`de güzel ve güneşli bir havanın garantisinin olmaması sebebiyle farklı alanlarda yapabileceğimiz çeşitli aktiviteler bulabilmekteyiz. Güneşin parlamayıp bulutların arkasında saklandığı günlerde, evlerimizde oturup günümüzü sıkıcı ve mutsuz bir şekilde geçirmeyelim diye her zaman yapacak birşeyler bulmak durumundayız.
Ve, beklediğim ve soracağınızı düşündüğüm soru şu, ‘Bu yaz havalar nasıldı?’ Doğrusunu söylemem gerekirse, hiç de iyi değil! Mayıs ve Haziran ayları hiç fena değildi, ancak Temmuz ve Ağustos ayı hem ortalama sıcaklıklardan düşük hem de ummadığımız kadar yağışlı geçmesi sebebiyle büyük bir hayal kırıklığı oldu diyebilirim. Bu yıl Indian Summer ( Hindistan Yazi) yaşayacağımızı umuyoruz, demek istediğim Eylül ve Ekim ayları kaybettiğimiz yazin başlangıcı olacak! ;) (Birkaç yıl önce de aynı şey olmuştu ve biz hala umudumuzu kaybetmedik!)
Izmir`den Brighton`a henüz gelmiş bir Türk öğrenciyle yaptiğim konuşmada ilginç bir konu oldu hava durumu. Brighton`a gelmeden önce Izmir`de hava sıcaklığının her gün 40 derece olduğunu belirtti ki bizim için 40 derece sıcaklık kulağa çok hoş geliyor, ancak 40 derece sıcaklıkta yanmaktansa, 20 derecede biraz bulutlu biraz güneşli biraz yağmurlu bir hava bana daha çekici geliyor diyebilirim. Siz hangisini tercih ederdiniz? Kendinizi yorgun hissettiğiniz ve terden yapış yapış olduğunuz dayanamıyacağınız sıcaklıkta bir hava mı, yoksa Bulutlu ve kasvetli görünen ama klimalı bir mekandan diğer bir mekana geçisi dilemediğiniz günlük hayata rahatlıkla devam edebileceğiniz bir hava mı?
Sonuca bağlamam gerekirse, bir ingiliz olarak, ne zaman güneşli ve ne zaman yağmurlu olacağını bilmediğimiz havalarımızla gurur duyuyorum ve buraya gelmeniz ve tecrübe etmeniz için sizi davet ediyorum!

This is a question often asked in England, in fact its one of the favourite topics of conversation here as, unlike Turkey, you really cannot rely on the weather to turn out well when you really want it to! How many times have you watched Wimbledon on TV and seen those covers pulled onto the court…see what I mean!
Each spring we chat amongst ourselves “hope we’re going to have a better summer than last..” and often more often than not we get disappointed. I guess the unreliability of the weather is why the UK has so much diversity of activities we get up to in the summer as we’ve all got to find something to do when the sun decides not to come out to play. We can’t just stay inside an be miserable as we would end up being miserable pretty often!
So then, the obvious question is, what’s the weather been like this summer? If I’m honest, not great! May and June were quite good, but July and August have been quite a dissapointment with below average temperatures and a bit more rain than we’d like. We’re hoping for an Indian summer meaning that September and October will make up for it. (This has actually been the case in the last few years so we’re keeping our fingers crossed!)
This did spark an interesting conversation I had with a Turkish student who has just arrived in Brighton from Izmir. Back home she said the temperature were hitting nearly 40°C everyday which to us in the UK sounds great, but if you are in 40°C heat then the though of 20°C with bit of cloud and some light rain sounds rather appealing! What’s better unbearable heat where you feel tired and sluggish, or dull weather than looks a little miserable but you can carryon your daily lives without hopping from one air-conditioned building to another!
So I conclude that I, as an Englishman, am proud of our unreliable weather and encourage you all to come over here and try it!
